What is TechShorties?

For the past several months, I've been developing a Learning Management System (LMS) for TechShorties.com. We teach real estate agents how to use tools like Twitter and Facebook to cultivate relationships rather than simply tweeting out their listings or talking about their next "open house."

We're calling our LMS the TechShorties Integrated Learning Environment (ILE). Based on WordPress, the interface features multiple modules (i.e. WP categories) filled with lessons on best practice use of online social media tools.

I've programmed the single post pages to only display a user's comments. In other words, this lets users leave themselves notes on each post. For discussion of the posts/lessons, I've added a plugin which automatically creates a forum posting in our integrated phpBB install.

There's much more to say about this, but for now the video above gives a good introduction to TechShorties and our WordPress Powered Integrated Learning Environment.

TiltShift Knoxville

Here are a couple of nice tiltshift shots of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Tiltshift photos are photos of real locations manipulated to look like minatures. I created these particular images via TiltShiftMaker.com.

Trailer for Spike Lee's WWII Film

Miracle at St. Anna, a Spike Lee film, tells the story of four black American soldiers, members of the all-black 92nd "Buffalo Soldier" division, stationed in Tuscany, Italy during WWII. Given my penchant for WWII films, I look forward to seeing this one when it comes out.

Recipe: Four Veggie Pizza

Since discovering this recipe last week, Beth and I have already made it twice. We both agree it is one of the best homemade pizzas we've had in a long time. Check out this visual recipe:

Tijuana and San Diego Photos

Last week, Beth and I arrived back from our 2008 Mexico Mission Trip in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. We spent July 19 through 26 in Mexico followed by a couple of days in San Diego. The trip exceeded our expectations. We are blessed with some great friends in Mexico, and our time spent with the women at the Women with Purpose Shelter was a treasure. I've started writing some of my reflections, and I hope to publish them in the coming weeks. In the meantime, enjoy some photos from our trip:

Light a Candle, Magically

I've known about this trick for a while (I think I saw it on Mr. Wizard when I was a kid); however, I have yet to personally meet anyone who is familiar with it. The video included with this post demonstrates the trick:

  1. Blow out a lit candle.
  2. Allow the smoke to rise from the wick.
  3. Hold a flame in the smoke rising from the wick.
  4. Watch as the candle "magically" re-lights.

If I remember correctly, I believe what's happening is that the flame causes the combustible materials in the smoke to ignite sending the flame back down the smoke to the wick.

Have you ever seen this trick before?
